For Y.O.U

I’m about to lose the battle and cross the line
I’m about to make another mistake
And even though I try to stay away
Everything around me keeps dragging me in
I can’t help thinking to myself
What if my time would end today, today, today?
Can I guarantee that I will get another chance
Before it’s too late, too late, too late
Forgive me… My heart is so full of regret
Forgive me… Now is the right time for me to repent, repent, repent...

Forgive me by Maher Zain ;))

..Wonderful story..

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd. “I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend the following afternoon) so, I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. I handed him his glasses and said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives."

He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” there was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. It turned out he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before coming to this school.

I would never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a very pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, “damn boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!” he just laughed and handed me half the books. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.

Graduation day arrived- I saw Kyle and he looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him!

Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. “Thanks,” he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach… but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift that you can give them. I am here going to tell you a story.

I started at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person’s life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other’s lives to impact one another in some way.

International Islamic University Malaysia

UNSOLVED WELFARE ISSUES OF IIUM, WE URGE FOR ACTION

1) STUDENTS' REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL 2009/2010 or SRC is the main student body, which play a vital role to cater the students' welfare as well as to fulfill students' rights in IIUM itself. The ultimate goal is to become a leading student body by striving for a more conducive environment for students to develop and hence enable the students to realize the mission and ideas of the university as stated in its Triple ICE.

2) The "Unsolved welfare Issues in IIUM" is the summary of comments, suggestions, complaints, critics and dissatisfaction from IIUM students regarding four major problems which are Security, Facilities, Academic and Financial, and Biah Solehah. The comments were received in many ways by SRC such as from DTE (Down to Earth), survey form, face to face complaint, Facebook, e-mail and etc.

3) All of these issues had been brought up by the current SRC (session 2009/2010) and even the SRC before them (session 2008/2009) to the IIUM administration. Besides, there were meetings and discussions being held between SRC and administration. In fact, the students themselves have voiced out on the similar point during Admin-Student Dialogue organized by SRC. Thus, SRC 2009/2010, as the voice of students, it is our responsibility to urge the administration to take immediate action on the unsolved welfare issues brought up.

4) This memorandum is supported by leaders from Kulliyyah Based Society (KBS), Mahallah Representative Committee (MRC), clubs and associations in IIUM

Demands

Therefore, WE, the IIUM leaders urged the IIUM Administration

1) To give full attention and immediate action for those issues listed.

2) We demand the authority to have some discussion with the students before imposing or making any important decision regarding student welfare and education.

3) We demand the authority to inform the students on any matters related to Ministry of Higher Education's implementation.

4) We dishonor any appointed seats arrangement since it against the constitution of IIUM.

5) We humbly request from your good self to response on these four issues within three months.

Thank You.

..Why study STATISTICS in Psychology..

Many students of psychology (including myself) are shocked when they discover that the study of statistics is necessary. “Maths!!! I just want to help people!” is the usual cry of derision. Is there a purpose in having potential psychologists, who do not intend to do research, suffer through the complexities and esoteric boredom of stats?

Simply put: Yes.

The statistical arts are basically a numerical summary of a set of recorded data. A sexual abuse therapist may see over 150 children in a year. Of these, 50 have anger management issues, 14 are promiscuous, 75 are diagnosed as experiencing ADHD, 10 are withdrawn, 5 appear to have no negative psycho-social behaviors, affect or cognition's, whilst another 5 have already perpetrated against other children.

The therapist would have more difficulty developing an awareness of the differences and similarities across the children if statistics were not available to summarize observations.

Statistics will also inform the therapist to associations and relationships between the characteristics and experiences of the children. For example, between diagnoses of ADHD, sexual abuse, age, gender and likelihood to experience abuse again.

The statistical information helps the children because the therapist grows in knowledge by reflecting on patterns of behavior and psychological well being. The therapist is now able to formulate hypotheses about interventions to aid a specific set of inappropriate behaviors, affect or cognition's. Using statistics the hypotheses can be tested, leading the therapist to better methods of intervention & evaluation; the child is lead to a better quality of life.

Communication of the therapist’s observations and research conclusions to other sexual abuse workers extends understanding and creates better interventions and supports for abused children.

This is an example of why we have statistics in psychology…to achieve our goal to help people.

Florence Nightingale (pioneer nurse, writer and avid statistician) agreed:

"Statistic…the most important science in the whole world: for upon it depends the practical application of every other science and of every art; the one science essential to all political and social administration, all education, all organization based upon experience, for it only gives the results of our experience."

A psychology degree places an expectation on you in the workplace to be able to;
  • design research
  • collect data in an unbiased (as possible) manner
  • analyze observations
  • determine if a change has occurred or not and to what extent
  • draw logical conclusions from the results to inform further research and understanding

There is also the responsibility for you, as a psychologist to;

  • identify interventions that really work (require reading of research articles)
  • use psychometric instruments to measure psychological states
  • facilitate learning, development and change for the individual/group
  • argue for or against decisions that directly impact on the well being of others

These goals cannot be met without the use of statistics.

Ultimately, raw individual data has little use if it cannot be synthesized into a larger overall picture; too much individual information leads to overload and is meaningless. Summaries provided by statistics create meaning from aggregate data that can be used to help people to live more fulfilling and powerful lives.

Informed decision making for the therapist and the client requires knowledge and use of statistics.

..Qualifying as an engineer..

The concept of engineering has existed for along time, beginning with the invention of fundamental objects such as the pulley, lever and wheel. Each of these inventions is an application of scientific knowledge together with the knowledge of natural laws and of physical resources. The end products are useful objects, tools or designs that help modern societies improve their standard of living.

With the advent of technology, more advanced gadgets are invented by the growing number of engineers around the world. Armed with knowledge and creativity, engineers have the power to bring and make changes to societies, economies and the environment. As the application of engineering brings with it great responsibilities, particularly with respect to public safety, a regulatory system for engineers and the engineering held is necessary. In Malaysia, this task is undertaken by the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM). ‘Under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967, no one is allowed to practice as an engineer in Malaysia without first being registered with BEM,’ says Dato’ Paduka Engr Haji Keizrul bin Abdullah, the president of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) session 2008/2009.

Qualifying route

The BEM is statutory body constituted under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967. It was formed on 23 August 1972 and is under the purview of the Minister of Work. The board was established for the purpose of regulating the professional conduct and practice of registered engineers in order to safeguard the safety and interest of the public. To be a Professional Engineer registered with the BEM, all graduate engineers must first go through the following steps;

  • Register with the BEM upon graduation, as it is compulsory under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 for all practicing engineers to register with the board.
  • Complete at least three years of relevant work experience after graduating with an accredited engineering degree. These training stints should, as far as possible, be completed under the guidance of a professional engineer who is in the same discipline as the graduate engineer.
  • Pass a Professional Assessment or become a Corporate Member of IEM.

To assist graduate engineers advance towards being a Professional Engineers (PEng in short, which carries the title ‘Ir’), IEM has training scheme called the IEM Log Book Scheme. If they opt for the IEM Log Book Scheme, they should follow the procedures documented in the IEM Training Scheme Guidelines.

Once the candidate complete their training (either n their own or through the IEM Log Book Scheme), the next step is for them to sit for the professional interview conducted by IEM. Once they pass this interview (which consists of an oral question-and-answer session and essay writing), they can be admitted as corporate members of IEM and are then eligible to apply to the BEM to be registered as a Professional Engineer.

Honorific titles: Ir vs Engr

There are two categories under which an engineer can register with BEM, according to Dato’ Paduka Keizrul. The first category, which is the graduate engineer category, carries no title. The professional category, on the other hand, will require an engineer to have three years of professional training. After the training and the registration with BEM, the engineer is entitled to use the honorific title ‘Ir’ in front of his or her name, and the abbreviation ‘PEng’ after his or her name.

IEM, on the other hand, is registered as a professional learned society with the Registrar of Societies. The organization was formed in 1959 as an institution for engineers in Malaysia. The membership of IEM consists of two classes, namely corporate members and non-corporate members. To be a corporate member of IEM, you must have a degree and working experience of no less than three years, and have passed the professional interview. Corporate members of IEM are entitled for registration as a Professional Engineer with the BEM and can then use the honorific title ‘Ir’ in front of their names, or the abbreviation ‘PEng’ after their names, and are entitled to established their own practice.

Non-corporate members of IEM comprise graduate members, student members, affiliate members and associate members. ‘As provided for under the IEM Constitution, graduate members of IEM are entitled to use the honorific title “Engr” once they graduate, even before getting the three-year working experience,’ explains Dato’ Paduka Keizrul, adding that affiliate members, associate members, and student members are not entitled to be designated by any titles.

Some advice

After getting a degree in engineering, you may start working as an engineer after registering with BEM. ‘Your value as an engineer in the job market would also depend on your qualification,’ notes Dato’ Paduka Keizrul. This is because some engineering courses may provide students with more hands-on experience in sought-after fields, hence adding more value to the qualification obtained.

Additional qualifications, such as postgraduate qualifications, will also add value to the career prospects of engineers. ‘Before taking up postgraduate studies, you must consider what you want from your life,’ advises Dato’ Paduka Keizrul. Some engineering graduates may take up postgraduate studies right after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. However, according to Dato’ Paduka Keizrul, it is good to get a few years of experience before you further your studies to the postgraduate level.

BE A LEADER WHO CARES

An effective leader helps people to achieve their goals by understanding what motivates them.

Many people mistakenly think that leaders and managers are the same. They are actually different because leaders focus on inspiring and developing people whereas managers focus on controlling people.

Leaders and managers need to influence people. Managers rely on formal power while leaders rely on personal power to influence people. People can respond in different ways when someone tries to influence them – they can resist, obey or agree happily.
The problem faced by managers is that too often, people simply obey and refrain from disagreeing with them because of fear.

Effective leaders are able to get people to accept their suggestion willingly because they tap into shared values and help people to grow. Effective leaders recognize the importance of building a collective identity because people who feel they belong to a group that gives their lives more meaning are likely to make sacrifices for the group and enjoy their work.

Creating a collective identity requires knowing what values and goals inspire people, and developing a climate where all members of the group feel a sense of purpose are respected and appreciated. Here are the core qualities of a leader

Leaders inspire trust

Trust is a complex phenomenon and its importance in work place relationships is easy to overlook. Different types of different behaviours lead to different types of trust. Being competent and reliable is a good start if you want to be seen as trustworthy, but you need to do more if you want to get enduring trust from people and not have your intentions questioned.

Leaders care

The best leaders care deeply about people, their organizations and the wider community. They transform people by personifying integrity, compassion and authenticity. The best leaders preach only what they practice, inspire others to seek greatness and share their explicit and tacit knowledge enthusiastically.

Great leaders energise people

They are able to motivate people by being role models, acting with fairness and convincing others of the worthiness of the future they envisage.

Leaders recognize needs

An effective leader recognizes the various needs of others and behaves such satisfies their need for dignity, respect and achievement. To be motivated, people need to be excited about their goals and be convinced that they can achieve goals that may seem unattainable at first. Effective leaders are exciting and inspire their people to make lots of little sacrifices so they can achieve lofty goals and maximize their potential.

Leaders influence organizational culture

Every organizational has its own particular culture. You can think of organizational culture as the way in which an organization operates and subsumes issues such as what matters to the organization and how members of the organization should behave and treat others. Effective leaders know how to built an organizational culture that can get the best out of people in a win-win way. Organizational cultures that are meritocratic and harmonious encourage people to do their very best.

Great organizational cultures make people look forward to going to work and perform at levels that surpass their personal standards and make members of organization feel that they are part of a big family that supports and nurtures them. Great organizational cultures also lead to great organizational performance.

Great leaders empower others

Work is a major part of people’s lives. It provides people not only with a means to pay their bills but also a sense of identity. Effective leaders know this and therefore ensure that their people believe that the work they do is meaningful and that they have ownership of their jobs. To empower others requires confidence that allows others to be great. Effective leaders empower people by giving them autonomy, allowing them to demonstrate their competencies, providing them with opportunities to grow, and making them feel that what they do matters to the organization and the wider community.

The secret to effective leadership is not to manage your people. There is no need in control people because most people take pride in their work and want to make a positive difference in their world. Micro-management stifles creativity, reduces trust in the leader and makes people feel unworthy. True leadership creates love for the leader, a desire to emulate the leader and a passion to do things above and beyond the call of duty.
